For those who like something out of the ordinary here is a full size road legal steam car. It was built by well known steam engineer Les Kent of Weymouth. The body is based on a 1904 Oldsmobile Curved Dash Runabout and it is painted in Oldsmobile colours of black and orange. It has a modern vertical multitube boiler which is fired by an automatic domestic type central heating burner, with electric pressure control and power provided by an inverter fed from a heavy duty 12 volt battery. The engine is a twin cylinder high pressure driving through a 3 speed gearbox ( 3 forward + 1 reverse), with traditional chain drive to the back axle. Boiler feed is by a twin cylinder mechanical pump driven from the crankshaft with by-pass valve and a manual pump. Hydraulic brakes are fitted. The car is great fun and very easy to drive, the burner control is a simple on off switch. From cold the boiler takes about 20 minutes to reach full pressure. There are two foot pedals, one for the brake, the other is the regulator (or throttle since it is a car). For the cost of a 3" scale traction engine this full size road going steam vehicle can give years of fun and create great interest along the way.
