You may recognise this engine as being for sale with us in 2016/7. Since leaving us last time, the engine has been used as a indoor display piece. As such, the photos and description are as before as there has been no change to its condition or how it looks.

Clayton Wagons Ltd. of the Titanic Works, Lincoln, was formed after the First World War as a subsidiary of Clayton and Shuttleworth Ltd., in order to concentrate on the production of steam wagons. They built both undertypes and overtypes with the undertype being more popular as it gave a greater payload for the same vehicle length due to the extra room with the engine being slung underneath the chassis.

The first Clayton undertype was completed in 1921 but only 45 units were produced when production ceased 8 years later. At the time this design was rather outdated as, by now, Clayton’s competitors were introducing multi-geared shaft driven wagons. One of the first articulated versions of the undertype was supplied to John Penrose, a haulage contractor of Chipping Sodbury in Gloucester in the early 1920's and this 2" version is based on that vehicle.

The example we have here is a 2” version built to the Robin Dyer’s design and serialised in Model Engineer volume 144 – 146. Fully silver soldered vertical copper boiler powering a duplex cylinder engine. For those who think that firing an engine of this size on coal is a fiddle, this example has been fitted with a Forest Classics gas conversion which makes life so much easier. Feed is by injector and mechanical pump with by-pass valve. For one of those panicky moments there is also a hand pump neatly fitted in the tender. The tractor unit comes with a fully sprung articulated trailer that is as nicely made as the tractor unit. Due to being laid up, it is not currently ticketted and for such a size engine, we wouldn't plan to include a boiler test in the price. Please ask for further details.

This is an engine that can easily be lifted into the back of a small car so transportation is easy. A well-engineered  unit which is enhanced by the nice quality paintwork.
