Berrybrook Steam Training Course

Do you want to get involved in the world of steam? Are you considering buying a miniature steam engine? Are you stuck for a gift idea or are you simply looking for a good day out?

If so our new one day course may be just what you are looking for. This course is aimed at beginners in the world of steam who are looking to learn what goes on behind the scenes of the traction engines on the rally field.

About the day

The course will be structured into a leisurely, yet highly instructive day, when you will learn all of the basics required to help out on a miniature or full size traction engine. These basics will include instruction on how to prepare, fire and drive a traction engine.

On arrival at around 9am, you and a maximum of two other students will be given a short safety briefing and will be shown around the engine cold by your instructor. We will then fill up the boiler with water and you will be shown how to lay and light the fire.

While the engine warms through, we will give a talk on how the engine works and what is happening as the steam pressure begins to rise.

With oil can in hand, you are shown the numerous oiling points and the general routine most engine owners go through whilst waiting for the engine to make steam.

Once the steam has reached working pressure it will be about 11 am; at this point your instructor will show you the basics of operating the engine, and then show you how to get more water into the boiler from the tender.

We will then head out onto the road and take the engine through the Devonshire lanes to a local pub. On this journey, you will be given the opportunity to steer the engine and travel in the traction wagon. All will be given an opportunity to do each activity.

After a few miles we will arrive at the pub where you will be given the opportunity to buy some excellent food (cost not included in the price), be it a meal or a snack.

By this time (around 1:30 to 2:00), there will be a photo opportunity then we will make our way back to Berrybrook in the same fashion as our previous journey.

Back in the yard the fire will be dropped, the tubes swept and the engine put to sleep. The purpose of this day is to give you a taster as to life with a steam engine.

We won’t be trying to sell you an engine but will be there to help you learn what you want to learn!

A perfect day for anyone looking for a great day out, a gift for a loved one or if you are in fact looking to buy an engine for yourself. Whatever the reason we hope this unique experience will be both exciting and rewarding!

What you will need:

  •  We will be working with coal and oil so overalls are recommended as well as some older clothes.
  •  There will be plenty of photo opportunities so don't forget your camera!
  •  Also bear in mind the lunch is not included in the cost of the day.

About the engine

We have some big changes coming to the steam courses at Berrybrook! We have recently sold our own engine, 'The General', which was traditionally used for our steam courses. For this reason, we currently have a couple of engines available for use on the course but will sort it out according to demand. We will not use an engine smaller than half-size and may even begin using full-size engines. For this reason, pricing is flexible. We will update this page when we know more!

Two or three people will be required for the experience to go ahead. This will either be two or three from one party, alternately you will be with other people.  Individually the day costs £150.00. However for 2 people booking at the same time the cost will be £285.00 or for 3 people booking at the same time, it will be £399.00. All prices include VAT.

Unfortunately we can only accommodate a maximum of 3 people on one course, this is to ensure everybody gets as much time as possible working with the engine. Of course if you wish to bring a family member or friend along to watch or take photographs then feel free, however they will not be allowed to participate in helping with the engine.
