We are pleased to have been commissioned to advertise for sale a nicely presented Marshall ‘S’ Type Compound Piston Valve Roller, delivered new to R. Dingle & Sons Ltd of Stoke Climsland, Cornwall.

Marshall No. 88097 is a 5NHP, 12-ton roller which was delivered new by rail to Bodmin, where it worked in and around the town. A pleasant engine with strong West Country connections, this roller is currently owned by the second owners from new, having been purchased by them 15 years ago from the grandson of R. Dingle. As the last derelict engine to be saved from Dingles yard, it made its first rally appearance at the Dingles Centenary Rally in 1985, around which time it was subject to boiler work by Roger Pridhams. Following this, it was laid up as a static display in the Dingles Steam Village museum for many years and therefore steamed infrequently.

In terms of the boiler condition, it has been given a clean bill of health by a reputable boiler inspector who has looked after it for many years. The firebox is in good condition, having been part of the overhaul by Pridhams in the late 1980s and the engine not having seen much use since. The barrel is original with only slight scoring to the bottom seam. The tubes were replaced a couple of years ago and the most recent hydraulic test was in 2016. The safety valves lift at 180PSI and have been modified slightly at the boiler inspector’s recommendation to allow for easier adjustment when in steam. The tender is original, is in good condition and has been treated inside with 2-pack anti-rust paint.

The roller is mounted on rubber tyres, as fitted by Reliant Rubber, and makes the engine a pleasure to use on the road. It has been fitted with a pilot valve on the regulator helping make the roller easily controllable, even when blowing off. It is a very usable roller for the road being able to travel at around 5-6mph and having a range of around 10 miles with a trailer and living wagon in tow. It holds back very well on the hills with minimal braking and by simply closing the regulator. Its famous ease of use has meant ‘Toby’ has become a popular roller for those looking to learn driving at the Steam Apprentice Club days in Cornwall – a nice addition to this engine’s modern history and something it has become relatively well-known for in the area. The motion is all in good condition and it runs well with a good drive train. It is presented today with a refurbished canopy which was fitted in 2016. The paint on the engine itself could be described as tired in places but is certainly presentable as a well-loved and useable roller.

Overall, an original engine with some real Cornish pedigree. The prospective owner will be buying an engine which has only been on the market twice before, once when it was new and once when it went to the current owners who have since cared for this engine to a high standard.
