An unusual opportunity to purchase a virtually complete example of the 6 ¾” Hayward-Tyler & Co. Hot Air engine.

We have been asked to advertise this example for sale in as seen condition. It is number 968 and was made in London in the early 1900s. A relatively unusual sight these days, hot air engines were a simplistic rival to the popular steam engine, and rising electric motor and internal combustion engines, of the day. Relatively low power output and the advancement of electric and internal combustion saw them fall out of favour commercially, but they are still fascinating items which are intriguingly simple. They were mostly used for pumping water in their later years and were sold until the end of the 1920s.

Built in the UK by Hayward-Tyler & Co. to an American patent (the ‘Rider’ design), the 1912 Hayward-Tyler catalogue states, “The ‘Rider-Patent’ Hot Air Engine, of which we have made many hundreds for pumping purposes, is one of the simplest motors in existence, without valves or small working parts, and is stoked like an ordinary hot-house stove.” (Sier, 1987).

The example we have available is in remarkably original condition and in need of an overhaul to return it to service. There is no evidence of any ice or other damage to the major castings and it has not had water in it for a long time. The pistons are currently seized into the bores however, as it is such a simplistic design, we doubt it would take much to free it apart for the overhaul. Aside from that, it appears to be virtually complete and would make a fascinating project. It is an impressive machine and reputably virtually silent when running. It is currently mounted on a pallet for ease of transport.

Overall, it makes for an unusual project or a remarkable display item.
