Asking Price SOLD

We are delighted to have been commissioned to advertise for sale this handsome Fowler Living Van, as supplied originally through the Ministry of Munitions during WW1 as part of a Steam Ploughing Set in 1918.

Steam Ploughing Sets were arranged during the first World War by the Government Food Production Department to boost domestic food production during the war. A total of 46 sets were issued by the Ministry of Munitions to approved contractors and owners at a special price of £3,000 per set, to be paid for on a Hire Purchase arrangement over five years. The set included a pair of Fowler BB1 class ploughing steam engines, a plough, a cultivator, a water cart, and a living van. Owners had the option of choosing one further piece of equipment and, in the case of the set this living van was a part of, they chose a 15’ turning harrow.

Living Van No. 13120 was issued alongside Fowler Ploughing Engines called Iris and Mavis. Those two ploughing engines remain in preservation today and are now known as Achilles and Ajax.

The set this living van was included in was supplied new to Watson and Haigh of Andover. They were agents for Fowler and the equipment worked on the Faccombe Estate for the Hon. Eric Bland Butler Henderson. The living van, either still as part of a set or individually, was later moved to a nearby estate where it has remained since. It was first used as accommodation for an estate worker before later acting as a store and shelter for the gamekeeper. The living van was restored by J. M. Errington, Wiltshire in 2016. Every effort was made to retain as much of the originality as possible to hold onto the pedigree and history of this living van, whilst also ensuring it was in structurally good order.

Today we present it for sale in generally good condition and as a wonderful piece of steam ploughing heritage. The interior is simply done and remarkably original. The floor is solid and looks to be structurally sound. There is no obvious evidence of any leaks in the roof. Externally, it is a charming looking living van! There is a small repair needed to the front slats (as photographed) and it isn’t in immaculate condition cosmetically but remember, where possible, much of the original timber has been retained.

We always encourage prospective buyers to visit and view our advertised stock where possible and we reiterate this point with regards to living vans owing to the nature of earlier items made of wood. We have included more photos than usual to give as many perspectives as possible but please feel free to contact us to have a look around it for yourself!

Overall, a delightful living van packed full of pedigree and charm.
