An unusual design to see in 4” scale, this miniature is based on the Durham & North Yorkshire 6NHP traction engine. Durham & North Yorkshire were an early maker of traction engines and no known full-size examples survived into preservation in the UK.

This example was built by a model engineer in the mid-90s. Although 4” scale castings and drawings are available today, the maker of the example listed for sale actually opted to use the 2” scale drawings and produce their own components and castings after doubling those dimensions. The design was originally featured by John Haining in the Model Engineer from 6th October 1978 until 7th December 1979.

The 4” scale engine is robust in its design and a decent size. To give an idea of size, it comes out slightly smaller than other 4” scale traction engines. The design is certainly Victorian in many ways and is reflective of the earlier design. Although generally well-engineered, there are signs that this miniature is a little ‘freelance’ in places and is therefore not as prototypical as many of the engines we see. There are a few small differences you will notice, such as the style of the reversing lever, smaller flywheel and locomotive style pressure release valves hidden beneath the Salter-style springs over the cylinder block. Generally, it looks well thought out and nicely made, albeit giving the prospective buyer room to improve on it if they wished. It is fitted with dummy governors, a whistle, firebox mounted mechanical water pump, hand pump and a steam injector. It is a single cylinder, 2-speed general purpose style traction engine fitted with rubber tyres for more comfortable use on hard ground.

Cosmetically, the livery is traditional and suits the engine nicely. It is simple in terms of its paintwork which looks to have been applied to a good standard. It is showing signs of patina in some of the corners which suits the agricultural nature of the engine.

It is made using a non-commercial welded steel boiler dated from 1993. The material paperwork is present, and we understand it was made by an experienced engineer – the welds visible look good but this can be confirmed further by a formal inspection. It is fitted with copper tubes. It comes with a folder of historical boiler reports and, if requested, we can instruct our independent, commercial boiler inspector to carry out an inspection at point of sale. As always, you are welcome to employ the services of your own boiler inspector if you prefer and we will always accommodate viewings whether in steam or cold at our premises near Exeter. If you are a newcomer to the hobby, or simply would like an induction about the use of this specific engine, we will also be including a half-day beginners' course in the sale of this example.

Overall, a great 4” scale miniature traction engine based on an early design and ready to go. It is an example which also gives the buyer scope to put their mark on it and make some cosmetic improvements if they wish.
