A 4" scale miniature based on a 3 1/2-ton small tractor produced by Ruston Proctor in 1905. Named the SD it sadly never took off resulting in Ruston Proctor scrapping the SD design and going on to focus on the vastly more popular 5-ton SCD tractors they have become better known for. Thankfully for the sake of preserving a unique design, the SD has become a popular design to build in miniature.

This single cylinder tractor is a nicely presented miniature in 4" scale coming out a shade larger than the commonly seen 3" scale Burrell traction engines and at a comparable size to the larger 3" scale Allchin and Marshall traction engines we regularly see. The SD tractor was always a small design and it is certainly manageable at this scale. It is a 2-speed drive train and is fitted with lamps, a mechanical water pump, locomotive style pressure release valves, a steam injector, solid flywheel, appealing canopy, and solid rubber tyres. The benefit of going for a small 4" scale tractor over a large 3" scale traction engine is the increased durability and general chunkiness of the build! It strikes us as a very substantial and well assembled engine which you would be hard pressed to wear out in a hurry.

Cosmetically, it is presentable, but the paint is not particularly well applied. It has been brush painted quite thickly in places and unfortunately brush strokes are visible. Most of the signwriting is actually stickers which are well applied. The livery is unusual with the distinctive choice of brown as a main colour - we think it suits the engine and sets it apart from the usual colour schemes shown on miniatures on the rally field.

In terms of the boiler, it is a welded steel boiler produced commercially by AJB Engineering in 2006 so, from that respect, it ticks every box. It comes with a folder of historical boiler reports and, if requested, we can instruct our independent, commercial boiler inspector to carry out an inspection at point of sale. As always, you are welcome to employ the services of your own boiler inspector if you prefer and we will always accommodate viewings whether in steam or cold at our premises near Exeter. If you are a newcomer to the hobby, or simply would like an induction about the use of this specific engine, we will also be including a half-day beginners' course in the sale of this example.

Overall, a pleasant little engine which is registered for road use and will provide hours of fun! It is large enough to drive around with a riding trolley behind it.
