One of the best freelance miniatures we have had the pleasure of offering for sale! Built in around 2005 using a commercially made steel boiler from Gloucester Steam and Traction Company. Although freelance in design so therefore not specifically scaled from any full-size traction engine, we would equate this example to being akin to a particularly large 3" scale traction engine (slightly larger than a 3" scale Marshall or Allchin 7NHP traction engine) and a small 4" scale traction engine (it is larger than a 4" Ruston Proctor tractor for instance). It is an example which would be best driven on a driving trolley being towed by the engine so has more in common with 3" scale traction engines in that respect.

In terms of the design, freelance engine builders often draw some inspiration from known traction engine designs. In this case, we see echoes of Marshall and Allchin in the heavy style of the build and four-shaft design.

Key Features:

  • Commercially made, welded-steel boiler by Gloucester Steam & Traction Co. with a good folder full of historic boiler paperwork back to the original material specifications.
  • Two-speed, single cylinder arrangement. A typical agricultural general purpose traction engine design.
  • Mechanical water pump and steam injector fitted for filling the boiler when in steam, as standard.
  • Steam whistle, mechanical lubricator, and Ramsbottom type pressure release valves.
  • Mechanically, it has been machined and built to a good standard throughout. It is a very substantially built engine which has been made to last and be easy to operate.
  • The paint is good albeit a little agricultural. Unusually in miniature, it has managed to gain a certain patina often only seen in full size engines.
  • The wheels are fitted with rubber tyres and the engine is registered for road use.
  • Speak to us about boiler testing options for this example going forward.
  • To include a half-day tuition session, if requested by the buyer.

Overall, a fantastic engine which will give the buyer plenty of hours of fun! This engine is a real credit to the builder and is a standout freelance engine.
