A project example of the ever-popular 4” scale Burrell Road Locomotive.

Built as the double crank compound arrangement with the 3-speed drive train. This is an impressive miniature and always popular on the road-runs and rally field. As typical, it is fitted with a water pump and injector. It has the correct, Ramsbottom pressure release valves and a traditional whistle fitted to the cylinder block. In true road locomotive style, it is fitted with a solid flywheel, motion covers, belly tanks and bunker extension. It also comes with a dynamo and dynamo bracket if the new owner wishes to continue the build into a Showman’s engine.

The reason we have listed it as a project is owing to the mechanical work needed to bring this one up to scratch. The boiler is in good order, being a commercially made boiler of 1997 and being accompanied with some paperwork which will allow the buyer to have it tested going forward. As it has been an ongoing project since the boiler year, it has seen hardly any use so is good in that respect (any prospective buyer would be welcome to inspect it at their leisure).

It looks as if the build was started to a high standard (i.e., the cylinder block looks to be well-machined, and many larger components are good) but the parts worked on more recently or set-up later in the build are not to the same quality. Unfortunately, the crank does not look correct and would need either remedial work or replacement. We have steamed the engine gently in our yard to check how it runs and confirm that essentially, we don’t think the work needed is beyond a hobbyist model engineer who is willing to put the time into rebuilding the motion with a little more finesse including corrections.

The paintwork has been applied poorly and, although the colour scheme is great, that too would likely need looking at to make a show winning engine. Having said that, if the mechanics were corrected, the paint would make for a great starting point to prove the engine over the coming years, so it is not an essential alteration.

This is an impressive design and a very desirable miniature. In good working order and presented to a good standard, we have seen similar examples make up to £30,000 in the past. Whilst we don’t expect the buyer to spend anything like the balance between its potential and current asking price, it hopefully gives the buyer an indication of the work we feel it needs and the level of this project.

Overall, a desirable engine needing attention to finish the build correctly (it was only really completed in recent years and never quite finalised) and which could result in something really quite special.
