Price  SOLD

A very rare opportunity to own an early Orton & Spooner Showman's Living Van of exemplary pedigree in a well-preserved condition, now advertised at a recently reduced asking price.

Made originally in 1910 for showman George Pickhard, who owned the waggon for the many years into preservation times. It was then acquired by the late Sir William McAlpine who owned it for a relatively short time before selling it to the late Lord Montagu of the Beaulieu Motor Museum. Lord Montagu and family have used and loved the waggon privately for many years, using the waggon for some time alongside their fair organ and Burrell Road Locomotive 'Lord Nelson' when it was in showman's guise under their ownership. The family have cherished the waggon and respectfully put their mark on it over the course of a couple of external repaints over the years. Lady Montagu, an artist, repainted the central mural on the ceiling, but has left intact many of the surrounding murals and patterns on the inside, indeed much on the interior is in original condition, having only had work when required, and then only very sympathetically. It features the original stove, tiles, mirrors, glass work, woodwork etc. The only structural work carried out was a panel of wood was replaced behind the stove as it was deteriorating due to many years of temperature - at this point, insulating material of early asbestos was removed making the waggon asbestos-free, a very acceptable exchange for replacing a wooden panel. A couple of windowpanes have been replaced to bear the initials of the Montagu family, again done to an exemplary standard.

The external was last painted in 2005. Despite being kept inside undercover since, it is really due another external repaint. Likewise, the undercarriage, although in fine condition mechanically, needs a sharpen up cosmetically. Whilst the family would usually take on this work, they have decided to leave it in order to give the new owner the opportunity to tailor it to their traction engine, if applicable. The top of the roof is watertight and has been discreetly replaced with fibreglass in its life to help protect the interior from damage. On our inspection of the waggon, we identified no visible signs of rot or woodworm throughout both the exterior and interior woodwork.

In terms of what is included in the sale, the waggon itself will come alongside an extensive collection of period accessories (crockery, wash basin, watering cans - the list goes on!). Over the years of using and caring for this waggon, the family have acquired a fantastic number of related items and all can be included in the sale, so this is very much a complete outfit.

We would highly recommend any interested parties taking the opportunity to view this waggon and we would be more than happy to arrange or accompany any prospective buyers to view the waggon. It is a fantastic piece of showman and preservation history which comes in fantastic condition and would complement any showman's set-up wonderfully.
