As a leading name in the sale of steam engines and a growing name in the sale of classic vehicles, an increasing workload is seeing Berrybrook Steam & Classics looking to take on an enthusiast and competent individual to help run the growing workshops and carry out the day-to-day workshop tasks, as required.

Thank you to all applicants to this role, we have now filled the vacancy. We look forward to welcoming our new member of staff soon.

The primary role of this exciting vacancy is to mainly work alongside the sales team and our boiler inspectors to prepare sold engines (usually miniature but increasingly full-size) for hand over. This is everything from cleaning, steaming, boiler testing and maintenance. There is a degree of freedom in the role and, as with anything linked to steam, many jobs we take on require a degree of problem solving and logic to complete. The successful candidate will also be involved in preparing the stock engines before sale and involved with taking on external workshop jobs.

Essential Attributes:

  • Mechanical understanding of road steam and related vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and tidy workshop.
  • An ability to complete the relevant paperwork to an appropriate standard.
  • A thorough approach to jobs and a drive to please the new owners of vehicles sold through ourselves.
  • A willingness to be flexible in the role, as part of a small-business, and as the workshops grow.
  • Willingness to help at our major trade shows – primarily on our annual stand at the Great Dorset Steam Fair.
  • Enthusiastic about steam and classic vehicles as well as a desire to help the company grow its portfolio.
  • A minimum of a B+E (car plus trailer) or equivalent driving license.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Confidence with the movement and handling of full-size steam.
  • An ability to carry out all, or some of, the following skills: machining, fabrication, painting, welding and similar skills (competency in specialist skills will play a part in the negotiation of wage and hours offered).
  • An aptitude for work on non-steam related vehicles as we expand our portfolio of classic vehicles.

Minimum qualifications: Grade C in GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent grades).

The wage and hours are by negotiation and will depend on the candidates experience and availability. It will be based from our premises near Exeter and is a rare opportunity to work with steam and classic vehicles.
