Supplied new to Northwich County Council in 1926, Aveling & Porter 11446 is probably better known from its life out of steam during preservation years! In the mid 1960s, after an unknown prior ownership, Colonel Moseley of Seales Farm, Upper Seagry donated this roller to Seagry Church of England Primary School for use in their playground. It became an icon for the Wiltshire village with countless newspaper clippings amongst the paperwork documenting the life of the roller through to its condemnation by the Health & Safety Executive in 2001 as being unsuitable to continue life as playground equipment. It was therefore subsequently ‘rescued’ and returned to steam.
It has recently been recommissioned with a new firebox, tubes, tubeplate and half boiler barrel. the gears are good and there is plenty of thickness on the rolls. The paintwork and general finish of the roller is a real credit to those who carried out the work – it makes for an attractive roller!
The most recent hydraulic test was carried out in April 2023 and it is currently in steam test meaning the buyer will be good to go for this season. We have steamed it in our yard and can report that it is a pleasure to steam and drive. It fires freely and performs as well as you could expect.
Overall, a superb roller with a quirky history and a very strong connection to a Wiltshire community, many who whom grew up playing on this roller in its namesake village of Seagry!
