Offered for sale on behalf of the family after a long ownership, Aveling & Porter 11793 is an honest roller which is complete and was laid up around 20 years ago, at which point it was steamed regularly with no notable issues.
Historically, the paperwork accompanying No. 11793 tells a pretty complete picture. The buff logbook shows it was supplied new on 4/7/1927 to Wandsworth Borough Council who we presume retained ownership until a new owner was listed in 1954. It then changed hands a couple of times over the next decade or so before being acquired by the current owners in 1971. Since 1971, it was rallied regularly through preservation by the owner and an ex-professional steam roller engineman during which time they carried out key repairs and maintenance. Those works over the years included a new firebox in 1974 and fire tubes in 1989 as well as some painting around 1988. The roller was laid up around 20 years ago and that brings us to today!
Since being laid up, and looking at the boiler with fresh eyes, there are now a couple of noted issues which would need remedying prior to obtaining a boiler inspection. We have sought the opinion of an independent inspector who has assessed the boiler (as far as practicable) and reported their findings for a prospective buyer to use as a starting point to understand the works need. A summary of those points includes thinning to the top front of the boiler barrel and seemingly localised thinning around the fusible plug. A full report of the findings is available for those wishing to view this roller.
Other than those boiler works; this roller looks to be in good order with the motion work and gears looking smart! For a buyer looking to carry out some of the works themselves, this would make a very appealing entry to steam roller ownership and it is a well-preserved example with a scarifier and many original components.
