An unusual opportunity to own a 6” scale, single cylinder traction engine, based on one of the most popular designs in miniature traction engine engineering.

This nicely presented 6” scale traction engine is based on the drawings for the much smaller 3” scale Burrell, to the well-known design by H. R. Plastow. Plastow’s drawings were based on the moderately sized 6NHP Burrell general purpose traction engine. This half-size example was completed in 2006 after a four-year build and was first seen on the rally circuit at Rempstone in 2006. It has been rallied regularly since then and today is found in good running order and is being sold in ready to go condition!

The unique size means it can be operated comfortably by both one or two people on the road and rally field. It is conveniently mounted on vulcanised rubber tyres and fitted with a double seat for comfortable use on hard ground. This one is road registered and includes a current V5C in the folder of paperwork. It handles nicely with a responsive regulator and, as would be expected of an engine this size, it steams freely. It is a single cylinder engine and is two speed, as typical for a traction engine of this design. Weighing in at just over a tonne, it is a good size which is relatively easy to manage logistically but still gives the fun of owning a larger engine. It is a capable miniature and will give the new owner plenty of enjoyment. The paint suits the engine nicely and it is a very traditional livery.

In terms of the boiler paperwork, it is a non-commercial boiler which was built to a high standard. Within the paperwork you will find the correct certification for the steel used and the welds for the construction. This paperwork is, of course, available for inspection when viewing the engine. Since completion, the engine has been subject to a good history of commercial boiler inspections which are also included in the folder of paperwork.

Please speak to us about boiler testing options going forward for the 2023 – the boiler tests are generally up-to-date. In terms of its condition, the boiler is in good condition. The most recent thickness reports show no issues of note aside from the usual slight pitting in places. The tubes, fitted from new, are faring well with general oxidisation noted but were considered generally to be all in good order when last inspected.

As standard, we will always carry out our usual checks on it before it leaves our premises, and we will resolve any notable faults identified at that point. As a ready to go engine, it does also benefit from including a half-day tuition session within the price. This is for familiarising the new owner with their engine before taking it home – do ask for details of this if you think you would be interested in making use of this offer.

In recent years, the engine has been subject to some work to maintain it to the high standard it is found in today. It is, overall, an excellent and honest half-size miniature which really strikes the balance between being usable and manageable.
