Offered for sale on behalf of the team manager for the McIntyre Collection; this is the 350cc ‘Potts’ Manx Norton raced by the late, great Bob McIntyre privately through the 1957 race season.
Having laid unused in the collection since 1962, we are now privileged to be able to offer this superb Norton for sale! In a time when Bob McIntyre was formally contracted to Gilera for his Grand Prix races, he still raced this very Norton, sponsored by Joe Potts, for his lower profile race meets throughout the 1957 season. The records show that McIntyre had a successful time with this motorcycle, landing podium positions everytime it took to the track. It was used for the single race season before being resigned to his shed which it sat following his sad passing in 1962.
It is presented today in the condition in which it was removed from the shed, uncleaned and as it was laid up. There are no chains fitted and a few other pieces have been removed but they are included in the sale. The faring is no long present however the faring brackets are ready to accept a replacement. At some point, the exhaust was replaced however the original is also included in the sale. We also understand that the piston are not original. The fuel tank is as designed and preferred by Bob McIntyre as the lightweight, low capacity Lyta sprint tank.
Fairly unusually for a race motorcycle of this era, the engine and frame numbers match. As an interesting addition, the usual gearbox number is absent on the bike, and are also absent in the records, suggesting it may be a matching gearbox too.
Although currently a non-runner, there looks to be nothing substantially wrong with it and would be a worthwhile and important rebuild to undertake. A superb piece of Scottish motorcycling history which was once owned and raced by one of the legends of motorcycle racing.
