Offered for sale is this remarkably unusual 2” scale Avery, based on the 18hp, undertype direct ploughing engine as built and used in the USA. This remarkable miniature was built over the course of 9 years starting in 2004 and concluding in 2013. The builder meticulously recorded his build in a series of photos and notes included in the sale.

The boiler is of silver-soldered copper construction and is built to the LBSC ‘Speedy’ Locomotive design. It is recorded as having been built commercially by Cheddar Models in 1998.

Key Features:

  • The silver-soldered copper boiler was made by Cheddar Models in 1998. In 2023, the current owner had a commercial boiler inspection conducted meaning the hydraulic is not due until Sept 2025 and the steam test is valid until Sept 2024; this means the buyer would be able to take delivery quickly! As always, we would give it a check over prior to leaving our workshop to ensure nothing further is outstanding.
  • A twin-cylinder, undertype arrangement which has been well made. There is also an intriguing ‘steam turbine’ electrical generator for powering the headlamp and a separately driven mechanical water pump.
  • Mechanical water pump and steam injector fitted for filling the boiler when in steam.
  • Mechanical lubricator, and loco-type pressure release valves, as well as a displacement lubricator (untested), and a slide valve chamber pressure gauge.
  • Well-built to a high standard throughout. It is a remarkable miniature which the builder clearly took a huge amount of care with.
  • The paintwork finish is basic, with the builder clearly aiming to capture the function over form attitude of many American engine makers, when compared with their UK-made counterparts.
  • The wheels are spoked type with thin rubber tyres.
  • Includes a half-day tuition session, if requested by the buyer.

Overall, a remarkable miniature which is almost unique in design. It sits large for its scale; currently it is next to a 2” scale ‘Thetford Town’ in our showroom and matches it – if not being slightly larger! Fitted with a number of additional, fun attachments, this will undoubtedly give the buyer many hours of enjoyment.
