A pleasant steam lorry, offering a superb starting point for someone entering the hobby. Bought by us from the original builder, the Savage Universal Carrier is based on a lesser-known Savage design which was offered, in this scale, until recently as castings to be built from scratch by Little Samson Models. A relatively powerful model, in 3” scale, it offers the builder the opportunity to sit on and drive the miniature, rather than sitting behind it on a trailer.
Key Features:
- The welded steel boiler was commercially made by Bell Boilers in 2016 and is accompanied by full documents. Although tested for the previous owner by their model engineering society to date, we would be happy to include a new commercial boiler inspection including a 10-yearly hydraulic test and 14 monthly in-steam/internal examination. The paperwork also includes a set of drawings.
- An under-type design with an unusual engine arrangement. It is a compound engine featuring a high-pressure piston-valve and low-pressure slide valve. It is a two-speed, chain drive to the rear axle through a gearbox. The gearbox also offers a neutral position.
- Steam whistle, Foster-type mechanical lubricator, and loco-type pressure release valves, as expected.
- Well-built to a good standard throughout. A remarkably unusual design which amazes us with its quirkiness and unique motion work.
- The paintwork lets the build down a little. Although a reasonably prototypical, simplistic livery, it is not to everyone’s taste. It is generally presentable and offers the buyer to relatively simplistically make their mark on it!
- A flatbed with a box mounted to the rear. Also includes a driving seat.
- The wheels are fitted with vulcanised tyres for a smooth and comfortable ride.
- Includes a half-day tuition session, if requested by the buyer.
Overall, we are impressed by this humble miniature. It offers a budget-friendly way of buying a more complicated engine.
