Offered for sale is an earlier Steam Traction World J-Type 4 1/2″ scale Foden which hasn’t been used for some time and is not quite complete in the body. Whilst the fundamentals of the engine are all in place and look acceptable, the work required to return it to a ‘ready to go’ miniature is beyond the scope of our usual commissioning process. As such, we have opted to sell it as an ongoing project for the buyer to pick up and continue with!
Key Features:
- Welded Steel Boiler, made commercially by Steam Traction World in 2010. We don’t tend to include any boiler testing within the sale of our project engines however a cursory look inside suggests that it would be serviceable following a thorough washout. As with any project miniature, we would encourage prospective buyers to check the boiler to their satisfaction. The most recent boiler report we can find in the paperwork is with the late owner’s model engineering club in 2018 with the hydraulic examination expiring in 2020.
- Papers include the majority build instructions and historical boiler information and certificates.
- Working pressure 140 PSI.
- Three-speed, double-high cylinder arrangement – as per Steam Traction World’s design.
- Mechanical water pump and injector fitted for filling the boiler when in steam, as standard.
- Twin mechanical lubricators and pressure release valves.
- It is not currently registered for road use.
- Mechanically, the engine was clearly built originally to a high standard using the well-known and respected kits from Steam Traction World. Unfortunately, a few years in storage haven’t been kind meaning it would now benefit from a sort out and overhaul to bring it back to its best.
- Cosmetically, the paintwork is pleasant although, like the mechanics, looking tired after a few years in storage. It is presentable after a good clean but offers potential to be something very smart!
- The part that makes this one very unusual is that the builder opted for a fifth wheel and articulated trailer, making it a J-Type. the trailer doesn’t look to have been finished however the parts are present. The rearmost axle (trailer) is seized but included.
- The wheels are the pneumatic type with double drive wheels on the cab. It has also been fitted with extra windows and a flywheel cover making it look the part!
Overall, an appealing project with loads of potential – we don’t see this one hanging around for long!
